Offered here is an original mid to late 1950s Swedish single rider jacket. During the post-war period, Sweden established itself as a premier exporter of leather outerwear. This was largely due to the specialized manufacturing hub in the Malung region. Factories in Malung utilized the local supply of goatskin to meet high demand across Europe, specifically exporting to the United Kingdom and West Germany. These were premium exports purchased by motorcyclists and outdoorsmen who required performance protection that was unavailable from domestic manufacturers still recovering from wartime shortages.

The jacket is identified as 1950s production by the presence of a Ruhr zipper. Ruhr was a West German hardware manufacturer based in the Ruhr Valley, an industrial center specialized in precision metalwork. During the 1950s, Ruhr fasteners were standard equipment for high-quality Northern European and Scandinavian leatherwear. The presence of this specific hardware is a primary chronological marker for garments produced in the decade following the war.

The construction is a single rider style featuring a longer body length. This specific cut was designed to provide additional warmth by covering a portion of the thigh, a functional requirement for open-air motoring in Northern European climates. The jacket is made from black vegetable-tanned Swedish goatskin. This material is characterized by a pronounced grain and high abrasion resistance. Swedish tanners mastered a slow, cold-water vegetable tanning process which preserved the natural strength of the hide.

Design features include a pointed aviator-style collar and two slanted handwarmer pockets at the waist. The hem is equipped with two side buckles to taper the fit and prevent wind entry. The interior is lined with a black and grey wool tartan, providing a high degree of thermal insulation. The sleeves are lined with a synthetic silky satin to allow the jacket to slide over underlayers without catching.

Condition

The leather is in great condition, with only a few minor scuffs and small nicks in places, along with some light fading. None of this affects the wearability or overall durability of the jacket.

The zipper works flawlessly, and the liner shows very little sign of wear aside from a few small repairs in places.

Restoration

The exterior leather has been professionally cleaned and conditioned using our tailored leather care process. The inner liner has been carefully hand cleaned and steamed, along with all internal and external pockets. The metal hardware, including snaps, zippers and buttons, has been cleaned and polished to a shine. This piece is fully wearable and requires no further maintenance.
